“Picture yourself driving down some truly rural winding Devon lanes. Imagine exploring a countryside rich in blooming Summer hedgerows with sheep safely grazing in their fields, as you enter a place known only to a discerning few, an area of outstanding natural beauty where two lush, picturesque valleys sweep down to secret beaches on a wild and rocky shoreline. Situated at the head of these valleys you will find a hidden treasure… an oasis of calm, culture, music and food trading in the ciders and ales of the region. You have arrived at The Old Smithy Inn. “
We are situated at the head of the historic and timeless Welcombe valley near the beautiful unspoilt coastline of North Devon and the striking Welcombe Mouth and Marsland Mouth beaches. The inn is surrounded by beautiful local walks and only a few minutes from the South West Coast Path. Our much-admired beer garden has a lovely view towards the sea with fabulous sunsets to be enjoyed on long sunny days and warm summer evenings. In the Winter months our roaring wood stove provides a cosy and inviting haven to relax in when the wind blows outside!
The Old Smithy Inn is North Devon’s only authentic thatched coastal inn.
Don't take our word for it!

The ethos at the Smithy is towards fresh food cooked on the premises with a strong bias towards local and British ingredients where possible. We are blessed with fantastic locally produced meat, game and fresh fish but also seek to strongly support plant-based food as a healthy sustainable option. Our approach has always been to be as inclusive as possible of those with food allergies and dietary preferences, (as always please inform your server if you cannot decide on anything from our extensive range of dietary options. We will be happy to modify any dish for you).
Children eat proper 'cooked from scratch' food at the Smithy. Kids sized portions of most mains are available.
Our Sunday Roasts are well known for the quality and care with which we prepare them. We have a rotating selection of beef, pork, lamb and gammon options alongside a fantastic nut roast. Our meat & vegetable gravy are prepared from scratch over 3 days from fresh stocks and are finished with wine and always gluten free.
